John Brown Recent Works

Several of John Brown’s recent paintings stem from photographs of military hardware (jets, tanks, personnel carriers, etc.).  His choice of subject matter is a condemnation of what he calls the “jingoistic, unthinking adulation of the military and militarism.”  Brown’s paintings are scarred and striated, drawn into with the same scraping tools he has favoured since graduating art school in the 1980’s.  His surfaces are forceful testaments to the artistic struggle, often taking months to build up and break down again to his satisfaction.  Says Brown of his work: “I like the finished thing. I always say, ‘I don’t like painting but I like paintings.’”Brown has exhibited internationally and has been collected in Canada by, among others, the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Royal Bank of Canada, Claridge, TD Canada Trust, and the Bank of Montreal.  This is the artist’s first solo exhibition at Galerie Division.
